Photo of The Week: I can say that I rarely feared a creature during a dive. But yesterday, during a dive at dawn I came across a real sea “monster”. I had never seen anything like it, this green moray was simply giant (photo 3-4 gives a better notion) and it was constantly projecting a little bit out of the hole and towards me. I really didn't know what to do. Also, a thermocline arrived just in time and the visibility dropped from about 10 meters to 4m. At one point I decided that trying to shoot her up close would be too risky and I turned my back, but I knew I would regret it and went back. After about 10 minutes of just swimming around her and observing how she behaved, I started to feel more confident and realized that like every other eel, it was only threatening from a distance and when you get close, it would retract in fear. I ended up spending around 40 minutes with her and still took a selfie at the end. Much respect for this animal and am very happy that it reached that size
without being fished/ killed.

Inland Ocean Coalition's Ocean Ambassador Training
The Inland Ocean Coalition, a non-profit focused on building land-to-sea stewardship across the nation, is excited to announce the application period for our fifth cohort of Inland Ocean Ambassadors has opened. The virtual 5-week training covers the most pertinent ocean protection topics and features top minds in ocean conservation. The sessions, held each Thursday via Zoom from 5-7 pm MT beginning September 30th and ending October 28th, are designed as intensive learning opportunities to engage with IOC’s staff and network. Throughout our history, communities of colour, low-income families, and rural, Indigenous people have suffered from air pollution, water pollution, and toxic sites near their communities. Environmental Justice looks to change that grim reality: to ensure fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all in the environmental arena. Environmental Justice communities define the environment as “where we live, work, play, learn, and pray.” In recent months, Environment Justice has become a key tenet of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Trawling bycatch increases risk of marine life extinction in Brazil
Fishing trawlers threaten marine life with extinction along Brazil’s coast. Researchers point out that regulating the practice brings ecological and economic benefits. Many countries already limit the activity in order to defend their natural resources, but trawling still persists in Brazil and risks causing further damage and even environmental crimes.
