When Covid-19 first started to really take hold in the U.S. back in March 2020, I started scouring all my usual sources for evidence of the industry’s response. And sure enough, the American Petroleum Institute and the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers, the two main trade groups for the industry, were immediately meeting with politicians, asking for regulatory rollbacks and other types of support. On June 22, 2021, NOAA announced the designation of a 962-square-mile area of Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan as a national marine sanctuary to protect 36 historically significant shipwrecks and related maritime heritage resources. NCCOS mapping products and ecological assessments of the area guided the designation of the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary and will inform its future management. ** Read more... Research shows yessotoxins to be a culprit behind summer mass shellfish mortality events in Washington
Researchers from Washington Sea Grant recently discovered that summer shellfish mortality events in Washington were likely caused by increases in yessotoxins produced by certain phytoplankton. While yessotoxins are not a threat to human health, understanding them and monitoring concentrations are integral to the informed management of shellfish. ** Read more... Indonesia assessing fish stock health to improve sustainable planning
Indonesia is assessing commercially valuable fish populations throughout its waters in a bid to improve the sustainable management of one of the world’s biggest fisheries.  The country’s fisheries ministry is carrying out evaluations of population health in the archipelago’s 11 fishing zones. The findings are expected to help policymakers identify areas with fish populations that are either healthy, recovering, or overfished. ** Read more...
