The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) seeks a marine conservation and
fisheries professional to support the leadership of our global marine
conservation effort. WCS invests in marine conservation across the

18. Post-Doc, NOAA
Seattle, WA
Optimal sampling strategy for assessment of Bering Sea and Gulf of
Alaska groundfish
An opportunity is available for quantitative fishery scientists and
ecologists with knowledge of age structured stock assessment methods,
and sampling strategies. An evaluation of the sampling strategies used
to assess the age composition of federally managed groundfish stocks off
the coast of Alaska is needed to identify an optimal balance that
provides the best available science for the greatest number of managed
species. The analyst will assess the trade-offs between the number of
age determinations processed and quality of age composition estimates
for managed species based on a variety of attributes including: the
value of the resource, difficulty in determining ages, and the role of
the species in the ecosystem. The Associate will review the current age
structure sampling strategies used by at-sea observers and field parties
on AFSC surveys. The Associate will assess the efficiency of the
current system with respect to collection of samples from target and
non-target species. The Associate will also review existing information
regarding the difficulty of age determination, the life history of the
species, interannual variability in year-class strength and the ageing
precision for the assessed species. The analyst will then conduct a
statistical analysis of the trade-offs between the number of age
determinations conducted and the representativeness of the samples as
proxies for the true age composition of the population. The analyst
will work with stock assessment scientists to assess how sampling
errors, aging error and/or aging bias is treated in their assessments.
Results will be presented to scientific advisory panels of the North
Pacific Fishery Management Council. The successful applicant is expected
to conduct original research related to improving stock assessment
methods. Knowledge gained from this study will be utilized to improve
the efficiency of the stock assessment enterprise while providing the
best available scientific information for stock assessments.
