                      for quantitative fishery scientists and ecologists
                      with knowledge of age structured stock assessment
                      methods, and sampling strategies.  An evaluation
                      of the sampling strategies used to assess the age
                      composition of federally managed groundfish stocks
                      off the coast of Alaska is needed to identify an
                      optimal balance that provides the best available
                      science for the greatest number of managed
                      species.  The analyst will assess the trade-offs
                      between the number of age determinations processed
                      and quality of age composition estimates for
                      managed species based on a variety of attributes
                      including: the value of the resource, difficulty
                      in determining ages, and the role of the species
                      in the ecosystem.  The Associate will review the
                      current age structure sampling strategies used by
                      at-sea observers and field parties on AFSC
                      surveys.  The Associate will assess the efficiency
                      of the current system with respect to collection
                      of samples from target and non-target species. 
                      The Associate will also review existing
                      information regarding the difficulty of age
                      determination, the life history of the species,
                      interannual variability in year-class strength and
                      the ageing precision for the assessed species. 
                      The analyst will then conduct a statistical
                      analysis of the trade-offs between the number of
                      age determinations conducted and the
                      representativeness of the samples as proxies for
                      the true age composition of the population.  The
                      analyst will work with stock assessment scientists
                      to assess how sampling errors, aging error and/or
                      aging bias is treated in their assessments. 
                      Results will be presented to scientific advisory
                      panels of the North Pacific Fishery Management
                      Council. The successful applicant is expected to
                      conduct original research related to improving
                      stock assessment methods. Knowledge gained from
                      this study will be utilized to improve the
                      efficiency of the stock assessment enterprise
                      while providing the best available scientific
                      information for stock assessments.</span></p>

                          The Marine Mammal Research Program (MMRP) at
                          the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB),

                          number of highly dedicated individuals for
                          fall internship positions. MMRP’s scientists
                          primarily study cetacean acoustic sensory
                          systems, specifically hearing,<br>
                          echolocation, and communication with our
                          resident false killer whale (Pseudorca
                          crassidens), and 2 bottlenose dolphins
                          (Tursiops truncatus). MMRP faculty, staff, and
                          graduate students have backgrounds in
                          psychology, engineering, marine biology,
                          zoology, and oceanography. MMRP collaborates<br>
                          with research groups and animal care
                          facilities all over the world to further our
                          understanding of cetacean sensory systems both
                          in natural and experimental conditions
                          providing valuable information that can be
                          used to mitigate threats to marine mammals.<br>

                          essential support to animal care and training
                          staff. Interns will shadow trainers in all
                          aspects of daily care, including food
                          preparation, sanitation, boat and facility
                          maintenance, while assisting in and observing
                          general husbandry, medical procedures, and
                          bio-acoustic research experiments. This
                          opportunity will provide interns with a
                          foundation in animal behavior, animal
                          husbandry, operant conditioning training, and
                          a unique opportunity to gain experience in the
                          highly competitive field of marine mammal
