Coordinator is responsible for overseeing mangrove management activities 
and project administration at the Blue Ventures Belo-sur-Mer field site.

Global concern is mounting about declines in marine biodiversity and the 
potential repercussions for people’s well-being, pointing to the need to 
improve biodiversity conservation and resource management. Some effort 
has been spent to identify management strategies that work ecologically, 
and thus crucial questions for marine biodiversity conservation and 
resource management to succeed are: what social and governance 
characteristics are essential for, or contribute to, successful 
management? And how can these be integrated into biodiversity 
conservation planning and management? The postdoctoral fellow will help 
to address these questions by working towards two objectives, as part of 
assistant professor Dr. Natalie Ban’s research group

1.      Using case studies and meta-analysis, analyse social and 
governance characteristics that contribute to desirable ecological and 
social outcomes of marine conservation and management initiatives at 
large scales.

A PhD, or will shortly satisfy the requirements for a PhD degree, in

management.

Familiarity with literature on social-ecological systems and common pool 
resources.

Experience working in marine systems is an asset, but not essential.

Ability to develop and pursue novel research approaches and solutions.

Strong oral and written communication skills; a record of publishing in

Ability to contribute successfully as part of a scientific team.

14. Director, Protecting Ocean Life on the High Seas, Pew Charitable Trusts

The director, protecting ocean life on the high seas, will develop and 
lead the implementation of a global campaign to secure agreement at the 
U.N., by September 2015, to launch negotiations to develop a new 
international legal instrument enabling the establishment of 
marine-protected areas and reserves on the high seas. This will include 
work in capitals around the world and at U.N. missions in New York, NY. 
The campaign will work closely with other organizations, including 
playing a core role in the coalition of 30-plus conservation 
organizations that comprise the High Seas Alliance (HSA), so as to 
galvanize international support for launching negotiations. The

focused project team with the support of other Pew units, and report to

The Assistant Coordinator supports the organization’s objectives of 
developing watershed residents into Bay stewards and understanding the 
Buzzards Bay ecosystem and its response to human-related impacts in 
order to guide restoration and protection. The Assistant Coordinator 
supports a long-term, water quality monitoring program to gather high 
quality scientific data to support conservation, restoration, and 
protection of our water resources.

The Assistant Coordinator is responsible for helping to coordinate the 
bay-wide, volunteer Baywatchers Monitoring Program and additional 
watershed natural resource monitoring programs (stream flow, anadromous 
fish, etc.). The Assistant Coordinator position is a combination of 
fieldwork, lab work, working with citizen volunteers, and data entry. 
This part-time, seasonal position is from May to August and reports 
directly to the Buzzards Bay Coalition’s Director of Monitoring 
Programs. The schedule is variable and averages 25- 30 hours per week

27. Post-doc fellowship, Texas A&M

The Department of Geology and Geophysics at Texas A&M University, 
College Station, Texas, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, 
Panama, are pleased to announce the availability of a postdoctoral 
fellowship funded through a National Science Foundation grant and 
private donations.

The project, entitled 'Elements of an extinction: Exploring the delayed 
Caribbean extinction with stable isotopes and trace elements', will 
integrate biotic and geochemical data to explore the environmental and 
ecological causes of the Plio-Pleistocene Caribbean extinction, with 
particular focus on the purported 1-2 m.y. delay in extinction.

The study combines O, C, and clumped isotope proxies, and P/Ca ratios 
with taxonomic and ecological data from the framework of the Panama 
Paleontology Project (PPP).

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in macroevolution 
and/or paleoecology, good quantitative and analytical skills and a solid 
understanding of stable isotopes. The successful candidate will perform 
stable isotope and trace element analyses (with assistance from lab 
personnel) and use the results to resolve the drivers of ecological 
change and evolutionary turnover in the Caribbean.

The successful researcher will be a joint fellow at Texas A&M University 
and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Panama, and will be 
expected to spend time at both institutions.

continue until position is filled. Interviews will take place either via 
Skype or at the North American Paleontological Convention in Florida 
(February, 2014).

California Wildlife Center in Malibu California is currently accepting 
applications for Marine Mammal Response and Rehabilitation 
Internships.Three positions are available during each session.The Spring 
Session begins March 12.The Summer Session begins May 14.During each 
session applicants are required to commit to a minimum of four days per 
week, 32 hours per week for eight weeks.There is flexibility in start 
and end dates.

Intern responsibilities include: assisting Marine Mammal Response Team 
staff and volunteers in the assessment, rescue and transportation of 
sick and injured marine mammals; assisting Marine Mammal Rehabilitation 
Team staff and volunteers in the care, rehabilitation and release of 
Northern Elephant Seal pups during the stranding season.


The internship is open to all applicants at least 18 years of age or 
older. Undergraduate students and non-students alike are encouraged to 
apply.If the intern intends to receive academic credit, the intern
will be responsible for making all arrangements with their educational 
institutions. Due to the unpredictable nature of marine mammal stranding 
response, interns may sometimes be required to work beyond their normal 
scheduled hours.Interns must be able and willing to work flexible hours 
including weekends and holidays.Interns will be required to have good 
physical strength and the ability to lift/carry 50 lbs. Interns need to 
have the ability to multitask and work in a fast paced 
environment.Animal care and/or marine mammal experience is a plus but 
not required.Applicant must demonstrate proof of negative TB test within 
the past year and a current tetanus vaccination.

Housing and transportation are the responsibility of the intern.Must 
have own transportation and current drivers license.Very limited on-site 
housing is available at no cost (i.e., up to 2 individuals at a
time).All individuals selected for on-site housing, regardless of 
Session, will be required to complete 40 hours/week.
