5. Director, Global Shark Campaign, Pew Charitable Trusts

The Campaign Director will lead the Global Sharks Conservation Campaign, 
with the goal of mobilizing the public, media and policymakers to 
strengthen conservation for sharks globally, and securing precautionary, 
science-based protections for sharks within the waters of various 
countries. Key areas of responsibility include directing and overseeing 
the implementation of current campaign work, and building on past 
successes by developing targeted, effective campaign strategies to 
further the impact and geographical scope of this high profile campaign. 
Two specific areas of focus will be to (1) develop the campaign’s work 
in Asia, building consensus and support within the organization for 
developing campaign activities in this region, and (2) implement a 
strategy to capitalize on the March 2013 decision at the Convention on 
International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna 
(CITES)—to list seven species of sharks and rays under Appendix II—that 
fully realizes the potentially game-changing conservation benefits for 
global shark populations inherent in this decision. The Campaign 
Director will oversee and manage a talented team of campaign staff and 
report to the Director of International Ocean Conservation   She or he 
will build effective relationships with senior policymakers in 
government and at international fora, key coalition partners, funders, 
scientists and the media to create support for the work of the campaign, 
through public education, advocacy, communications and research.  
Additionally, the Campaign Director is an integral part of the 
International Ocean Conservation team, and will contribute to efforts to 
raise resources for campaigns, and work collaboratively with team peers 
to support broader marine campaigns and initiatives.

Haystack Rock on the northern Oregon Coast is part of the Oregon Islands 
National Wildlife Refuge and is a designated Marine Garden by the State 
of Oregon. Haystack Rock is used by seabirds, shorebirds, and waterfowl 
as feeding and wintering grounds and the rock provides important 
breeding habitat for eight species of birds including Tufted Puffins. 
The rocky intertidal habitat fronting Haystack Rock teems with unique 
plants, fishes, and invertebrates. The area is accessible at low tide, 
thereby attracting thousands of visitors every year.

The Program Coordinator works with staff, volunteers and partner 
agencies to educate the general public and dozens of visiting school 
groups about the marine ecosystem at Haystack Rock. The Program 
Coordinator develops and presents educational materials both on and off 
the beach giving public presentations to a wide variety of audiences.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for selecting, scheduling, and 
managing seasonal staff and volunteers, and must work closely with the 
non-profit group, the Friends of Haystack Rock. The Program Coordinator 
must have good people skills to guide and engage the program’s varied 
supporters.

Other duties include maintaining equipment in good working condition; 
summarizing and reporting data; and working closely with area schools to 
schedule field trips. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in 
a variety of weather conditions on the beach during variable hours 
surrounding low tides.

Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in a natural 
resource field of education, experience working in a friendly and 
professional manner with the public and a valid driver’s license.

Preferred qualifications include experience in environmental 
interpretation; working with seabirds and/or intertidal ecosystems; 
teaching school-age children; supervising volunteers or staff; managing 
budgets and grant writing; and proficiency with MAC Pages, Numbers, 
Keynote, iPhoto, and Outlook.
