Position Objectives
- Identify key stakeholders for engagement in development and financing 
of protected area systems
- Develop a legal and policy roadmap for developing offshore marine 
protected areas and zoning schemes in Fiji, including investigation of 
industry compensation schemes
- Work with the national Protected Area Committee and relevant 
stakeholders to define protected area categories for Fiji
- Conduct a review on options for operationalizing and financing 
protected area networks in Fiji
- Assist the Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area network to identify 
opportunities for inshore fisheries management reform
- Facilitate activities to strengthen natural resource management under 
existing legal, institutional, policy and governance systems
- Advise communities and provincial governments on development of 
natural resource management plans
- Build capacity of local resource managers and provincial government 
staff to strengthen compliance and enforcement under existing management 
systems

Qualifications
Masters degree or minimum 5 years experience in disciplines related to 
law and natural resource management policy, with a preferred focus on 
inshore and offshore fisheries management. Ability to work with diverse 
array of stakeholders, including government, industry and communities. 
Knowledge of Fiji and broader Melanesian legal and policy systems for 
natural resource management and governance preferred. Must demonstrate 
strong verbal and written skills in English. Must be willing to travel 
and work at times in rural and remote areas.

undergraduate programs and especially to web-based learning and research

interdisciplinary marine science that includes education research is 
desired, as is a demonstrated potential to create high-impact 
partnerships and publications with the marine science research community

11. Data Specialist/Collections Curator and Stranding Network 
Coordinator, The Whale Museum

This position manages the long-term scientific data that supports the 
research and provides the substance for education programs and exhibits. 
Current projects focus on: maintaining longitudinal data sets that track 
Southern Resident orcas’ movement patterns through a 34 year sighting 
database; 30 years of marine mammal stranding data; over 20 years of 
vessel monitoring & trends data; acoustics monitoring data; and a museum 
collections database of artifacts and recording media. Partnerships with 
other organizations and researchers are critical to our work. Current 
partnerships include, but are not limited to, NOAA-Northwest Region, The 
SeaDoc Society, and John H. Prescott Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance 
Grant Program.

This position works closely with the Executive Director and the Research 
Curator as the Data Specialist/Collections Curator to manage several 
databases, including marine mammal sightings, Soundwatch vessel trends 
data, and Museum collections; and as the Stranding Network Coordinator 
to coordinate the efforts of the San Juan County Marine Mammal Stranding 
Network. This includes coordinating responses, necropsy set-up, 
logging/shipping samples to various researchers, and overseeing grant 
management. The main field season for stranding network duties occurs 
between May and October. This position also trains and supervises a 
volunteer network of approximately 50 people; and routinely moves marine 
mammals or other items in excess of 50 pounds. The majority of this job 
is computer-based, primarily data entry and database management. The 
successful candidate will be highly flexible as response work can occur 
any time, day or night.

Cefas is seeking a highly-motivated coastal scientist to conduct 
research for our nuclear portfolio, the science base of which underpins 
applications to build and operate new nuclear power stations around the 
coast of the United Kingdom. It is an integrated programme of marine 
physical, chemical and biological science addressing issues ranging from 
the effects of construction, cooling water abstraction and 
thermo-chemical discharges on the marine environment, to advice on the 
siting of infrastructure and environmentally-derived operational risks. 
The coastal geomorphology and oceanography component of the portfolio 
considers how developments and associated coastal defences will impact 
the nearshore zone, including potential impacts on ecology, sediment 
transport and coastal configuration. It also examines changes to coastal 
processes and coastal morphology, including extreme events, over the 
station life-time (> 100 years) in order to inform both design and the 
regulatory process.

for unpaid Conservation, Science & Education Volunteer Internship 
positions.  The Conservation, Science & Education Volunteer Interns will 
assist with the production of Animal Care Manuals, the FrogWatch USA 
citizen science program, the Conservation Endowment Fund, the climate 
and greening initiatives, the development of Animal Program and 
conservation project webpages, the Annual Report on Conservation and 
Science, and the Professional Development program.

The Conservation Science & Education Volunteer Interns will interact 
with AZA Program Leaders and Taxonomic Advisory Groups, conduct 
literature reviews, and work under the guidance of the Conservation 
Science Department Staff.  Opportunities to take part in related events 
(e.g. lectures, conservation events, etc.) may arise and offer valuable 
experience. These unpaid volunteer internships are offered on a 
full-time basis for a 3-month duration between September -December, 
2013, although some scheduling flexibility is available.
