Senior Associate, Federal Fisheries Policy Reform Project
Washington, DC

Pew Environment Group

The mission of the Pew Environment Group is to promote policies and practices that protect the global atmosphere, preserve large intact wilderness ecosystems and conserve living marine resources. For the past two decades, the Environment group of the Pew Charitable Trusts has been a major force in driving conservation policy in the United States, and increasingly internationally. The group's work is focused on reducing the scope and severity of three major global environmental problems:

 *   Dramatic changes to the Earth's climate brought about by the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases in the planet's atmosphere;
 * The erosion of large wilderness ecosystems that contain a great part of the world's remaining biodiversity; and,
 * The destruction of the world's ocean environment, with a particular emphasis on marine fisheries.
The Environment Group's Marine Program

The Pew Charitable Trusts has played a major leadership role in successfully promoting policies, both in the United States and abroad, that protect the ocean environment and the life it contains. We have been instrumental in bringing about many of the major improvements in fisheries management and marine conservation that have occurred in the United States since the mid 1990s. In addition, we have sponsored a large number of groundbreaking research studies published in recent years that have fundamentally changed the way in which the scientific community, the public, policymakers and the media think about the world's marine environment.

Federal Fisheries Policy Project

The Federal Fisheries Policy Project<http://www.pewtrusts.org/our_work_detail.aspx?id=146> leads efforts to ensure that federal fisheries managers effectively implement the law to end overfishing, rebuild depleted fish populations and protect ocean ecosystems. We also work with Congress to ensure that these implementation efforts are adequately funded and that the legal fish conservation mandates are not weakened. Finally, the campaign works closely with scientists, policy makers, fishery managers, fishermen and conservation organizations throughout the country to advance the campaigns goals. For 2011, the campaign will focus on the following:

 * Prevent weakening amendments to the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA), the national law that governs management of U.S. ocean fish populations, by highlighting the need to and benefits of ending overfishing.
 * Provide members of Congress with positive solutions to help fishermen who are transitioning to sustainability and to ensure sustained funding for fisheries management reforms.
 * Support successful implementation of the MSA regionally (in cooperation with the Environment Group's End Overfishing regional campaigns) by advocating for appropriations, educating members of Congress on key issues and highlighting regional success stories.

Position Overview

The senior associate reports to the Manager, Federal Fisheries Policy Project, and the Director, Federal Fisheries Policy; and is located in Washington, DC. The senior associate will work with the Manager, Director and other members of the campaign team to research, analyze and communicate federal fisheries policy. The senior associate will also ensure that all Federal Fisheries activities and products (including reports, educational materials and factsheets) are based on fact and grounded in science. This position is approved through December 31, 2011 with a high likelihood of renewal pending board approval of an extension of the Federal Fisheries Policy Project.

Responsibilities:

 * Monitor, analyze and help the Federal Fisheries campaign team influence federal fisheries policy within the Administration. This includes developing relationships with technical staff at the National Marine Fisheries Service and other agencies; keeping abreast of policy developments; providing cogent analyses of proposed regulations, fishery management plans and amendments, guidelines and reports for the campaign team; drafting public comments on behalf of the Director on regulations, reports and white papers; and related duties.
