Director of Trash Free Seas Program
Washington, DC

Learn More About the Department/Program:
Ocean Conservancy's Trash Free Seas Program is a dynamic initiative focused on eliminating trash in our ocean. The Trash Free Seas Program seeks to reduce the flow of trash that ends up in the ocean, remove trash from the ocean, coasts and waterways, and reinvent products and packaging to reduce ocean trash. For 25 years, Ocean Conservancy has been the dominant voice on ocean trash as the founder and leader of the International Coastal Cleanup, the world's largest volunteer effort for our ocean and waterways. Ocean Conservancy's Trash Free Seas initiative is building on this foundation and significantly expanding the efforts and tools available to address ocean trash. Our primary emphases include deepening the scientific understanding of ocean trash, building a social movement to demand trash free seas, engaging industry to develop solutions and advancing policies that create trash free seas. A key innovation of the expanded initiative is the establishment of the Trash Free Seas Alliance, a cooperative group of businesses, trade associations, NGOs, scientific institutions, community groups and leaders and other leading organizations who share the common goal of eliminating trash from our ocean.

Primary Responsibilities:
The Director of Trash Free Seas is responsible for leading and managing both our existing Trash Free Seas portfolio and our ongoing expansion of the initiative. A critical component of the Director's responsibilities will include developing the Trash Free Seas Alliance, a co-operative group of businesses, leading environmental organizations and others focused on developing solutions and product innovation around trash commonly found in the ocean including plastic bags, cigarettes, plastic bottles, single-use food packaging, and fishing gear. Leveraging Ocean Conservancy's background in data collection on marine debris, the Director will collaborate closely with Ocean Conservancy conservation science and policy staff to strengthen the value of data collected during the International Coastal Cleanup, cement scientific knowledge on the issue of marine debris to support science-based policy solutions, and produce materials to build a scientifically-credible case for eliminating trash in the ocean. The Director will work closely with Ocean Conservancy's communications experts and Trash Free Seas team to continue to expand and enhance the International Coastal Cleanup event and build a strong public movement for trash free seas. The Director will also work OC staff to advance effective policies and develop support tools help replicate policy successes.

 * Formulating high impact policy solutions to support cradle-to-cradle product reinvention, reduction of the flow of debris, and removal efforts.
 * Working collegially with Ocean Conservancy Resource Development staff in stewardship of funding partnerships, cultivation of new partnerships and creation of fundraising materials to support program growth.
 * Promoting an integrated and cohesive approach to Ocean Conservancy's Trash Free Seas Program by deepening the connection with other Ocean Conservancy programmatic efforts.

 * We're committed to creating long-term change. We continue to monitor legislation and policies long after they fall from the front-page headlines to ensure that vital aspects of ocean life are always protected.
