Subject: Job Announcement: Biometrician for Makah Tribe
To: Peter Gaube <pgaube at uw.edu<mailto:pgaube at uw.edu>>
Dear Pete,
Can you please help me share a job opportunity with the Makah Tribe’s Fisheries Management Department with your colleagues, former students, and friends. The position is a Biometrician. Our goal is to hire someone who can do both field work and research activities and conduct rigorous statistical analyses.
This position was created with a grant to conduct research on Lake Ozette sockeye salmon. The Biometrician will oversee an acoustic tagging study of adult sockeye salmon to monitor survival and behaviors as they hold in Lake Ozette. The Biometrician will also analyze data previously collected on Lake Ozette sockeye salmon to determine if the population is experiencing a decline in average size and fecundity of individuals, evaluate if restoration efforts at Lake Ozette spawning beaches are improving the habitat, and evaluate and improve abundance estimates of Lake Ozette sockeye and the two subcomponents of the population of lake spawners and river spawners. The Biometrician should be able to publish 3-4 papers from these studies.
The Biometrician will have the opportunity to help other staff within the Makah Tribal Organization with studies on marine mammals, invasive species, terrestrial wildlife, analysis of halibut and salmon tagged with popup satellite archival tags, analysis of water and air quality, and many other potential studies. In addition to conducting research activities, the Biometrician will likely get involved with fisheries management and help evaluate forecasts of fish abundances used for management decisions.
The position will start as grant funded but can change to a permanently funded position if the Biometrician proves themselves to be a valuable member of the team to advance our scientific studies and improve our ability to do sound fisheries and wildlife management.
This position will be based in Neah Bay, Washington. We are seeking an applicant that is committed to working in-person as this will give them the best ability to be a resource to our full Tribal Organization to help with questions on statistical analyses and study design.
The Makah Tribal Organization is on a 32-hour work week (8-hour days, Monday-Thursday). The pay rate for the position is $68,290-$75,878 per year.
