Passive Acoustic Monitoring of Whales Across Scales: From Vocal Behavior to Ecological Trends
Passive acoustic monitoring is a powerful tool for studying marine ecosystems: a variety of tools exist to listen to sound in the ocean at scales ranging from the behavior of individual animals to habitat use and movement across ocean basins. In this talk, I will share some examples of my research using acoustics to study baleen whale behavioral ecology, including using sound and movement recording tags to study fine-scale vocal behavior of humpback whales. Passive acoustic monitoring can also address broader ecological trends using long-term networks of passive acoustic recorders, like those maintained by the Passive Acoustics Branch at NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Science Center. At NOAA, I am working on integrating oceanographic data with acoustic detections of baleen whales to explore environmental drivers of baleen whale distributions along the US east coast.
