Plasticity in Benthic Cnidarians
Plasticity - the ability of organisms to dynamically adjust their phenotypes in response to changes in the environment - is essential for the fitness of a broad diversity of organisms. Studying plasticity can inform us about the (epi)genetic regulation of phenotypes, mechanisms underlying foundational biological processes (e.g., development), population responses to global change, and more. Benthic cnidarians (e.g., sea anemones, corals, etc.) comprise a globally distributed group of species that are useful models for studying plasticity owing to their ecological and evolutionary histories. In my seminar, I will share lessons from my research on a diverse group of cnidarian species, focusing on these organisms' remarkable capacity for plasticity in physiology, development, and symbioses. Overall, continued investigation of plasticity in cnidarians holds promise to transform our understanding of fundamental biology across systems, including how sentinel species are responding to the modern-day stresses of anthropogenic climate change and novel pathogen-based diseases.
