In Hot Water? Acclimation and Adaptation in a Warming Ocean
Copepods are widespread, diverse, and ecologically important. How they respond to climate change will have important effects on marine ecosystems. These characteristics also make copepods an excellent model system for examining the processes that underlie organismal responses to climate change (e.g. phenotypic plasticity and adaptive evolution). In this talk I will discuss a series of data syntheses, laboratory experiments, and field surveys on patterns in copepod thermal limits. While acclimation and adaptation both have strong influences on patterns in vulnerability, I will also highlight how the interaction between these two processes may be particularly relevant for predictions about long-term responses to climate change.
