Hi all,

Sorry for the multiple emails. I forgot to mention that Tracey also requested that you either mention me or that you’re from WHOI in the last question field of the form (the one that asks if there’s anything else you’d like to share) so that VIPS knows how you found them,

Thanks!
Nina

Subject: [All-postdocs] tutors needed for Falmouth public school students

Hi everyone,

Tracey Crago, the director of Falmouth Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS<http://www.falmouthvips.org/>) asked me if I could reach out to you all to see if anyone was interested in tutoring Falmouth public school students. As you might imagine, VIPS has had a lot of requests from students for tutors this year, especially from those students that are totally remote due to the pandemic. I’ve been tutoring one middle-school student in math and earth science (I’m not sure she was fully prepared for my level of enthusiasm when she told me she was learning about tectonic plates) and it has really been a great and rewarding experience. It’s a particularly great opportunity if you’re like me and love to teach but haven’t been doing a lot of that now that you’re a WHOI postdoc. Currently, all of the tutoring is over video conference (and I suspect will be for the rest of the year) so those of you not in the Falmouth area can definitely also participate if you’re interested.

See below for some more information from Tracey and on how to sign up. Certainly feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

Cheers,
Nina

From Tracey:

Greetings and I hope this email finds you well!
I have a request. Many of our students are in need of tutoring! As you might expect, the pandemic has created challenges on top of challenges for our students and their families. Students who are learning remotely are struggling to stay engaged and on top of the workload. Technology issues, feelings of isolation or disconnectedness, and anxiety have impacted students who had not previously struggled. And for students who had a hard time before remote learning are falling even farther behind.
Since the pandemic began, Falmouth VIPS volunteers have learned to use technology to support students through tutoring, mentoring, and a new program called academic coaching.
The requests for volunteers to work with students in these capacities is growing significantly.
If you have time to meet with a student weekly (virtually), we’d love to hear from you.
We need volunteers for students in all grades and in all subjects.
We have created a sign-up form so that you can list your preferences (grade level, subject, school, day/time). We will then match you with a student whose needs match your interests and skills:
https://forms.gle/puF7mGVMPUwNwfcn8
We will provide training and ongoing support (we received a grant to train our volunteers on video-conferencing platforms used by the district). We will also check in with you periodically (or as often as you'd like) to see how things are going. We will support you as you share your time with our students.
I really hope to hear from you. And I would love to have you share this request with friends, neighbors, and family members who may want to help. Because it’s virtual tutoring, you don’t even have to be in Falmouth, which makes this a great opportunity for volunteers who spend their winters elsewhere.
Thank you most sincerely for considering this request.
Tracey
