The bloom of Emiliania huxleyi that began about June 1, 2018 in Dabob and Quilcene bays has been growing steadily throughout Hood Canal. The bloom has extended southerly to Lilliwaup and Seabeck. The leading edge is visible from the shoreline as far south as Sisters Point on the North Shore of Hood Canal, just south of Dewatto. Yesterday was our first day of seeing the bloom on the NASA Earth Observatory satellite image. Community members are posting photos of their view on our Facebook page (no account required to view) at Bivalves for Clean Water.

The bloom is about a week earlier than last year. It was preceded by about 3 weeks of incredibly clear water in the intertidal areas with limited to zero phytoplankton present in our net tows.
