The Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) seeks an experienced project manager to manage the sample analysis, interpretation, and reporting of results for APCC's Cyanobacteria Monitoring Program<https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapcc.org%2Fcyano%2F&data=05%7C01%7Csemco%40whoi.edu%7C3cb65bc9de8e4def0c9d08db87db4e61%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638253148224125633%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=0IMagw6eKQCww0Q5A9wO1ZyIe7sLWVW9YFWXHlWE%2BqM%3D&reserved=0>
APCC is a 501(c)(3) environmental organization founded in 1968 to promote policies and programs that foster preservation of Cape Cod's natural resources. Our goals are to preserve, protect, and restore Cape Cod's natural resources and environment (https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapcc.org%2F&data=05%7C01%7Csemco%40whoi.edu%7C3cb65bc9de8e4def0c9d08db87db4e61%7Cd44c5cc6d18c46cc8abd4fdf5b6e5944%7C0%7C0%7C638253148224125633%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=%2FnZIc%2BmDukRZq4Xsh8AkumH98KWGfO3cKOhEU%2FcgFNM%3D&reserved=0 ). Our monitoring programs are designed to provide science-based information to inform outreach, policies, and actions to achieve these goals.
Our Cyanobacteria Monitoring Program goals are to:
* Raise public awareness of the health and ecological risks posed by cyanobacteria blooms;
* Help inform proper responses to cyanobacteria concerns in order to promote public health;
* Monitor priority ponds across the Cape; and
* Motivate public action to address the causes of harmful cyanobacteria blooms (HCB) by improving water quality.
APCC's Cyanobacteria Monitoring Program partners with officials at the town, county, state, and federal levels as well as local pond associations and residents to conduct cyanobacteria monitoring in Cape Cod ponds. Approximately 120-140 freshwater ponds are monitored, covering all 15 towns on the Cape. Each season from late May through October, monitoring data are collected biweekly. Monitoring results, interpretations, and recommendations are reported within 48 hours to local officials and the general public through reports, emails, and our interactive map of monitoring results. Results are communicated as either "Acceptable," "Potential for Concern," or "Use Restriction Warranted" which describe the potential risks of exposure to cyanobacteria toxins corresponding to cyanobacteria monitoring results. End-of-season reports are provided which recap and summarize results for the entire season.
Responsibilities: The Cyanobacteria Science Coordinator is responsible for: 1) Ensuring the overall scientific quality of the program through oversight of sample collection, analyses, interpretation, and reporting of monitoring results, and 2) Communicating results and other information to municipal officials, agencies, organizations, and the public in an accurate clear manner. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
* Ensure rigor and accuracy of the cyanobacteria monitoring program,
* Supervise project interns who conduct pond sampling, sample preparation, lab analysis of cyanobacteria identification, fluorometry, and reporting of results;
* Ensure that staff and interns are applying the program protocols and quality assurance protocols accurately and consistently, and that reporting is timely and in accordance with communication protocols;
* Oversee data management, data analysis, quality assurance, and report production;
* Photos and supporting data: review and decide whether to send to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MA DPH) and health agents or not;
* Provide quality assurance review of data and interpretations made by staff and interns;
* Weekly/biweekly reports are sent to Town Health Agents and other stakeholders as specified in MOUs;
* Results are uploaded to the online GIS map and checked, including information on whether towns posted advisories or not;
* Final reports at end of season.
* Coordinate with Barnstable County lab for toxin testing of samples that are pre-screened by APCC:Review data and decide whether to send samples to the County lab for testing for toxin;Review and record results from County;
* Check to see if towns followed up on APCC recommendations and/or toxin testing results by posting advisories or taking other actions.
* Maintain and calibrate lab and field equipment;
* Prepare and send the Final reports at end of season;
* Provide presentations to the public, health officials, or others;
* Assist with proposals as needed.
