NECWA (the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance) has 2 fall internships available for high school, college, or graduate students. They are the Southcoast Terrapin Project (STP) and the Marine Misfit Stranding Program. If interested, please see below.
Internships typically require a 2-3 month commitment and a 20-30 hour workweek. Interns act as research assistants and are engaged in all phases of a project, from fieldwork to laboratory work.
Internship positions are non-paid and can be coordinated privately or through a school or university program. Interns must provide their own transportation to and from work areas and housing is not provided.
We are also seeking volunteers (of any age) for each of these fall programs or for additional activities.
Southcoast Terrapin Internship Project (STP) - Fall 2023 Season
NECWA interns and volunteers work alongside staff members to study and document Northern diamondback terrapin hatchlings in the Pocasset, Wareham (Onset, Buzzards Bay), Marion, and Mattapoisett areas.
Intern activities include:
Collecting hatchling terrapin sighting, biological, and behavioral data at all field sites
Collecting environmental data when in the field
Office work including, data input and analysis using Microsoft Excel, Adobe PhotoShop, and Google Drive.
Learning photo-identification techniques that utilize Adobe Photoshop to process photographic images of individual diamondback terrapins.
Participating at festivals and other community outreach events with schools, libraries, and other venues in the New England area.
Marine Misfit Stranding Program - Fall 2023 Season
This Internship focuses on fall and early winter strandings of ocean sunfish, torpedo rays, triggerfish, and other “misfit” marine wildlife that strand along the shores of Cape Cod and surrounding areas.
NECWA also works with government and non-government organizations to help rescue other marine wildlife, including cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) and sea turtles.
Intern activities include:
Helping NECWA staff locate stranded misfit marine wildlife in shallow water or stranded on a beach
Use kayaks and small boats to rescue live marine animals in shallow waters.
Help with necropsies (animal autopsies) of dead stranded marine wildlife.
Capture and transport injured marine birds (seabirds, sea ducks, gulls, etc.) to rehabilitation facilities on Cape Cod.
Collaborate with other nonprofit and government organizations who rescue and research other marine wildlife on Cape Cod, including IFAW (marine mammals), Mass Audubon (sea turtles), and DMF (sharks and other marine fish)
Office work including, data input and analysis using Microsoft Excel, Adobe PhotoShop, and Google Drive.

The New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NECWA) is a non-profit organization based in southeastern MA. We are dedicated to the protection and conservation of diamondback terrapins and other marine wildlife in the New England area. We conduct field research on diamondback terrapins in an effort to advance our understandings of their biology and ecology, as well as support conservation efforts on their behalf. Information collected through our research activities is also used to form the basis of our educational outreach activities within the New England community.
