Dear Editors,

I realize this might be coming to you later than it should. I would appreciate you sharing information about this before the event. This should be a great program and is our first program since the pandemic (we only had one before everything happened!).

Thank you so much for considering,
Best,
Kate Roderick
Chapter Chair

Public Meeting and Program

The Norse Discovery of America and Beyond!

with Archaeologist Gregory M. Lott

BREWSTER, MA —The Cape Cod Chapter of the Massachusetts Archaeological Society presents The Norse Discovery of America and Beyond! with Archaeologist Gregory M. Lott Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 7:00 pm at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History 869 Main Street/Route 6A Brewster.

Gregory’s talk will go beyond the theory of historian Professor Frederick J. Pohl that Leifur Erikisson (son of Erik the Red) landed on Cape Cod in the 10th century and the extensive work done at L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland by Norwegian explorer and author Helge Ingstad and his wife archaeologist Anne Stine Ingstad on the only verified Norse settlement in North America. The program will delve into numerous other Norse objects and possible locations in North America such as the runic inscription found on a boulder along the shoreline of Noman’s Isle south of Martha’s Vineyard, a Viking age coin found in Maine, a Viking sword and axe in Ontario, Canada, to the Kensington Runestone discovered in Minnesota.

Gregory is an independent researcher and former field technician with the Plymouth Archeological Rediscovery Project based out of New Bedford. Growing up on Cape Cod led to a lifelong passion in history and archaeology focusing on the Norse migration west. In 2019 he was involved with an Experimental Archaeological Project (creating iron with local raw materials) in Iceland. Presently he is the Vice President of the Massachusetts Archaeological Society and Chair of the Society’s Southeast Chapter both based in Middleboro.

Greg will also discuss the role the Massachusetts Archaeological Society plays and the importance of the various chapters across the state.

Anyone interested in archaeology or history is invited to participate by joining the Chapter or attending the program.
