The quest to understand what makes us human, and how and when we got this way, has attracted the interest of scientists across disciplines for centuries. The fossil record documenting our physical and behavioral evolution in Africa since the split from an ancestral chimpanzee lineage roughly 7-8 million years ago has improved to the point where we are able to identify the timing of milestone events that shaped our evolutionary past
