American Eels & Rainbow Smelt - Life History and Population Trends
with Brad Chase, Diadromous Project Leader, MA Division of Marine Fisheries
American Eels and Rainbow Smelt have supported people in New England as a source of food
for a long time. Both have unique life histories that involve migrating between fresh and salt water.
Smelt spawn in freshwater rivers like river herring but do not travel as far upstream. Eels make the opposite trip - they begin their lives at sea, migrate to freshwater to live, and then return to the sea to spawn. Brad Chase will talk about these fascinating migrations, the historic fisheries for these species in Massachusetts, and the monitoring, research and habitat restoration work that is taking place along the coast.
