Marine Science and Sailing Instructor (East Harwich, MA) :
 
Seeking a mature, fun, and safety-oriented Marine Science and Sailing Camp Instructor with sailing experience, to work at the Pleasant Bay Community Boating (PBCB) on Cape Cod from mid-June to the end of August. PBCB’s 3.6 acre waterfront campus is located on the largest estuary on Cape Cod and offers affordable summer sailing and marine education programs for all ages and capabilities. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Plan and teach daily PBCB marine science activities with another instructor using established curriculum. Plan the delivery of morning classes and afternoon sailing activities with the primary goal of having fun. Inspire students (ages 6 – 14), mentor interns (ages 15 – 20), and participate in an end-of-summer de-briefing. The instructor will use the US Sailing REACH curriculum modules and must be available to attend a training session prior to the start of the summer.
 
Job Description:
Lead marine education activities onshore and on the water. Classes are run in an open-air boathouse, on the water, and in boats including Flying Scots, sunfish, kayaks, canoes, and PBCB’s new pontoon vessel.
 
·       Prepare established, hands-on activities following the US Sailing STEM curriculum guidelines.
·       Supervise one or two teaching interns, provide daily orientation, informal feedback, and offer leadership directions in accordance safety guidelines.
·       Liaise and coordinate Marine Education classes with the Sailing Director.
·       Identify and evaluate the risks associated with class activities and take appropriate action to control the risks.
·       Provide students with positive feedback and reinforce safe procedures.
·       Communicate with parents/guardians about the well-being of students.
·       Track attendance, collect student evaluations, and attend weekly brainstorming meeting with the Camp and Science Program Director to debrief and voice equipment needs and concerns.
·       Independently modify curriculum to maximize fun and learning.
 
Minimum Requirements:
Must possess strong interpersonal skills
Undergraduate degree in-progress in a related Marine or Environmental subject
Comfort with small repairs and periodic “McGuivering” to fix a technical problem
Experience mentoring youth and offering leadership skills 
Experience with rowing, kayak and canoe paddling
Comfort with dingy sailing
CORI and SORI check
 
Preferred requirements:
Undergraduate or Masters degree in Marine Science, Education, or related subject
Experience teaching youth in a camp setting
US Sailing Small Boat Sailing Level 1 certificate
Current First-Aid and CPR certificate

May use boats and sail boards when off duty.
 
Working Conditions: Office, classroom, outdoors, and on-the-water environment
Location: Pleasant Bay Community Boating, 2287 Route 28, Harwich, MA. 02645
Dates: June 15 to late August, 2020 (into September possible)
Hours: Mon – Friday, 8:30 – 4:30 (some half days)
Pay: $15 - $17 per hour, depending on experience
