The *Center for Coastal Studies is thrilled to host author Sandy Macfarlane
on Monday, July 29 **at 2 p.m. for an afternoon presentation* filled with
stories and insights from Macfarlane’s most recent book *Swirling Currents:
Controversy, Compromise, and Dynamic Coastal Change*.



Whales closer to demise; sharks chasing seals chasing fish; turtles
stranding; fisheries reeling; shellfish aquaculture expanding; Gulf of
Maine heating rapidly and Gulf Stream slowing down — all in the context of
dynamic coastal change. Sandy Macfarlane probes the stories behind the
headlines in an engaging narrative of personal stories and scientific
investigation that entertains as well as informs. *Swirling Currents*
navigates “managing coastal environments and social pressures of today with
historical perspectives of the past and the needs of the future.” (Dr.
Judith McDowell, Woods Hole Sea Grant Director, Emeritus).



Macfarlane’s curiosity about all things marine began in youth and continues
today. Aided by forty years of hands-on experience in resource evaluation,
policy and management, and decades of recreational rowing in her 14-foot
Cape Dory, she learned about the biological and physical world around her.
In the process, she also gained insight into the social, political, and
economic landscape of coastal communities. Swirling Currents is her third
book.



Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing by the author.
