Cold dry air colliding with warm moist air, a rapid pressure drop, strong
winds-- Mother Nature has possibly given you a snow day, and if not, some
good extreme weather to talk about!

To relate, you could go check out the Data Jam dataset
<https://sites.google.com/view/nes-lter-schoolyard-datajam/data-jam-data-sets>,
"Nor'easters of 2018, the ocean view", and interpret storm conditions as a
class, or in groups. Students could share out their own interpretations in
a creative way or with Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning
<https://www.chemedx.org/article/implementing-claim-evidence-reasoning-framework-chemistry-classroom>.
And if weather isn't part of your curriculum, I'm sure there's a dataset
that connects. No science can stand alone
<https://scienceornot.net/2012/01/23/science-is-a-collective-enterprise-its-models-are-cumulative-interconnected-and-coherent-2/>,
even if the MCAS subject test is looming in the spring.

The Northeast US Continental Shelf Long Term Ecological Research project at
WHOI is once again helping students and teachers get their hands on real
data to do real interpretation and communication.

For students, relating data to their experiences and prior knowledge
<https://sites.hampshire.edu/ctl/2017/09/14/the-importance-of-engaging-prior-knowledge/>
will
help their new knowledge and practices stick. Sharing their understanding
will activate more parts of their brain
<https://www.npr.org/sections/13.7/2013/12/02/248089436/the-truth-about-the-left-brain-right-brain-relationship>,
can engage different learning styles, and make everyone laugh or smile
<https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/articles/200504/laughter-the-best-medicine>
.

Two steps to get involved-- register to be a part of the NES-LTER
Schoolyard to receive updates on opportunities sponsored by the project.
Pre-register for the Data Jam to indicate your interest in student
participation and receive resources and support getting your students to
jam on some data.

Don't let the Data Jam "rules" dissuade you or intimidate you from giving
it a try. The rules are guiding principles only. No group of students
trying to jam with some crazy data will be discouraged.

Data Jam intent registration
<https://sites.google.com/view/nes-lter-schoolyard-datajam/contest-essentials/registration-form>
is
open until Dec 15. Visit the site for more information. We will have
instructional and helping webinars beginning in January for all of those
pre-registered. Check it out at
