Digging Into the Past
“Landscapes of the Past: Looking at the Peoples of Ancient New England”


BREWSTER, MA ­ The Cape Cod Museum of Natural 
History in Brewster presents “Landscapes of the 
Past: Looking at the Peoples of Ancient New 
England” with Suanna Selby Crowley, PhD. Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at 1pm.

  Using a geoscientific perspective, what can be 
learned about the settlements and adaptations of 
the First Peoples in New England? 
Geoarchaeologist Suanna Crowley, a.k.a. “Dr. 
Dirt,” will take a look at the landscapes of 
post-glacial New England and the incredible 
evidence for human resilience and sustainability 
in some of the most unforgiving landscapes of the 
past. Special attention will be given to evidence 
of the First Peoples of New England and their deep ties to the region.

Dr. Suanna Selby Crowley is an archaeologist with 
over 25 years of field and research experience, 
specializing in geoarchaeology, geomorphology, 
and pedology (soil science).    Her recent 
domestic work has been on formation processes of 
archaeological sites in New York, Pennsylvania, 
Virginia, and Massachusetts. Suanna is also the 
current president of the Massachusetts 
Archaeological Society, the statewide 
preservation organization, and she sits as a 
Commissioner on the review board of the Massachusetts Historical Commission.
