HI all,

Our colleagues at the Mystic River Watershed Association and DMF continue to pilot a new means of tallying the spring herring run. They are crowdsourcing analysis of video taken at the Upper Mystic Lakes Dam. Recent updates to this dam and other streamflow obstructions mean that herring are making it back to spawning grounds that have been cut off for over 100 years. For instance, DMF is currently grading a streambed for the fish to reach Horn Pond in Woburn. Some great photos from yesterday’s Boston Harbor Ecosystem Network field trip are here<https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2029881967225773.1073741831.1877128272501144&type=1&l=2e10d50d16>.

Here's how you can spend a few minute counting fish: https://www.mysticherring.org. This video-counting operation complements a live volunteer counting program that’s been running for years, and happily the data comparing the two methods matched up pretty well in the first year. MyRWA is working with a number of area schools on this effort as well with both live and in-class activities.

Interesting concept, great citizen science. Spread the word – anyone can do this, and it’s fun!

Carole
