Waquoit Bay Reserve Needs Volunteers for Visitor Center and Events: Training Starts Tuesday
Waquoit Bay Reserve is recruiting volunteers to help staff their visitor center and represent them at community events. The Reserve seeks community members who enjoy working with people and would like to learn more about the coastal environment. Visitor Greeters volunteer one 3-hour shift weekly during the summer months in our Visitor Center. The Reserve is also seeking community members to join our Community Outreach Team to help us participate in local events. The Reserve gets many more requests to participate in festivals and other outreach events than our own staff can handle. We will notify our community outreach team of opportunities to staff tables at events and volunteers can sign up on an individual basis.
Training will be offered at Reserve Headquarters starting on Tuesday, June 5 and continuing for the next two Tuesdays for visitor greeters and Community Outreach Team members.
On Tuesday, June 5, MA Department of Conservation Certified Interpretive Host trainers will offer training on excellence in customer service through the National Association of Interpretation. A workbook will be provided in exchange for committing to be a visitor greeter or member of the Community Outreach Team for the summer.
On June 12, Reserve educators will introduce volunteers to Waquoit Bay Reserve and the important issues facing the Bay. Reserve staff will share information on current research and other updates about the Reserve followed by a staff/volunteer lunch to kick off the summer season and allow everyone to get to know each other. This day will also include the nuts and bolts of staffing the visitor center and events.
For the final day of the training, a field trip of the Reserve is planned for June 19 which will include South Cape Beach, the Quashnet River parcel, and a trip out to Washburn Island with an insider's tour by the Island Managers.
For further information or to sign up for the training, please contact the Reserve's Volunteer Coordinator, Laurie Tompkins, 508-457-0495 x108 or laurie.tompkins at state.ma.us<mailto:laurie.tompkins at state.ma.us>.
