Plastic built the modern world. But a century into our love affair with plastic, we’re starting to realize it’s not such a healthy relationship. Plastics draw on dwindling fossil fuels, leach harmful chemicals, litter landscapes and destroy marine life. As author and journalist Susan Freinkel points out in her engaging and eye-opening book, Plastic: A Toxic Love Story, we’re nearing a crisis point. We’ve produced as much plastic in the past decade as we did in the entire twentieth century. We’re drowning in the stuff, and we need to start making some hard choices.
Susan Freinkel is a science and environmental writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Smithsonian, Health, Discover, The Nation, Reader’s Digest, and other national publications. She is the author of American Chestnut: The Life, Death, and Rebirth of a Perfect Tree, which won a 2008 National Outdoor Book Award and Plastic: A Toxic Love Story. She lives in San Francisco, but having spent nearly every summer of her life on Mashpee Pond, also thinks of Cape Cod as home.
