Matthew Cunningham is a rising star in the world of landscape architecture. A native of Maine, Matthew is passionate about the dramatic and dynamic ecological patterns of seasonal New England, and his observations of these natural systems greatly influence his firm's environmentally responsive and contextual approach to design.

Matthew will show us a variety of residential landscapes, large and small, that embrace native flora and existing site ecologies, and display the beautiful seasonality of our region. Recognizing that change is an inexorable but integral force within sustainable ecosystems, Matthew's firm views each of their gardens is a living, evolving organism. This philosophy shapes all aspects of their design process from conception, to installation, and management. He will explore how allowing a project to evolve as conditions change— while maintaining design intent— results in robust landscapes that stand the test of time. A successful garden may be as integral to "home" as the house. Matthew strives to integrate the two, building connections between interior and exterior spaces that facilitate time spent in the garden and strengthen our relationship with nature. Come be inspired by beautiful, vibrant landscapes that enhance life for both their human and their wild residents.

Matthew Cunningham is an award-winning landscape architect who is committed to excellent design with ecologically sustainable principles. A graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design, he worked at the renowned firm Reed Hilderbrand Associates before starting his own practice. Matthew was named “International Designer of the Year” by the APLD in 2017.

Limited public parking is available at the garage under the Cambridge Public Library for a small fee. Look for the entry ramp on Broadway, to the left of the main library entrance. There are also plenty of metered and residential spaces, as well as parking garages in and around Harvard Square. We encourage you to arrive early and allow time for parking if you travel by car.
