Former U.S. Ambassador Robert Barber to Speak at MBL Falmouth Forum, December 1
Woods Hole, MA - Former U.S. Ambassador Robert Cushman Barber will share personal anecdotes and reflections of his experience as Ambassador at the Marine Biological Laboratory's Falmouth Forum<http://www.mbl.edu/falmouth-forum>, Friday, December 1. Barber's lecture, titled "Iceland, An Ambassador's Perspective," will be held at 7:30 PM in the MBL's Lillie Auditorium, 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole. The free series is presented by the MBL Associates<http://www.mbl.edu/associates> and offered as a cultural connection between the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Cape Cod community. Free parking is available in any MBL lot.
Barber will describe the unique aspects of serving in Iceland, related in part to the country and its peoples' focus upon ingenuity and innovation in utilization of natural resources (renewable energy deep below the surface and fish/shellfish from the sea). He will detail Iceland's special geostrategic significance to the U.S., historically and currently, and the resulting close bilateral relationship and collaborations ranging from NATO, to the Arctic Council, to governmental organization of eight nations within the Arctic Circle.
Appointed by President Obama, Barber served as U.S. Ambassador to Iceland from 2015 to 2017. He recently resumed his commercial law practice with Prince Lobel Tye LLP as a partner in the Corporate Practice Group.
An avid musician, Barber will share his experiences with the people of Iceland, a progressive, modern society that continuously ranks highly for quality of life, and how beer and the Blues got him into the "Club."
The MBLWHOI Library will offer open house of the Marine Biological Laboratory Rare Books Collection <http://www.mblwhoilibrary.org/collections/rare-books-and-mbl-archives> prior to the lecture from 5:45 to 7:15 PM in the Grass Reference Room, Lillie Building 2nd floor, located at 7 MBL Street.
