Sea Education Association to Host Lecture on Coast Guard Search & Rescue
Sea Education Association (SEA) will host a public lecture, “Rescue at Sea! History & Procedures of Coast Guard Search & Rescue Operations,” on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m. Capt. Chris Nolan, SEA Assistant Professor of Nautical Science, will deliver the lecture, the first of SEA’s Winter/Spring Lecture Series. The lecture will be held at James L. Madden Center Lecture Hall, Sea Education Center, 171 Woods Hole Road, Falmouth. It is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
About the Lecture
The sea is a dangerous place. That’s why minimizing the loss of life and property in the marine environment is one of the U.S. Coast Guard’s oldest missions. In this faculty lecture, Capt. Chris Nolan, a former commanding officer of a U.S. Coast Guard cutter, will use compelling videos and photographs to describe the history of the Coast Guard search and rescue mission. He’ll also discuss the modern tools, techniques, and procedures that make dramatic rescues at sea a routine activity for the United States Coast Guard.
About the Lecturer
Capt. Chris Nolan is an Assistant Professor of Nautical Science at Sea Education Association / SEA Semester. He holds a mariner’s license as master of vessels up to 1600 tons upon ocean routes. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Marine/Environmental Science from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and a master’s degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Administration from Oregon State University.
The Lecture Series will continue as follows (PLEASE SAVE THE DATES):
February 12 - Carl Herzog (visiting faculty) - "Be Not Too Bold:" Colonial Smuggling & the Stealthy Boat Captains who Made it Possible
April 2 – Dr. Craig Marin will lecture on Environmental Issues of the Caribbean (title TBD)
April 23 - Dr. Jeff Wescott – Time & Tide: An Anthropology of the Ocean
(All lectures are at 2 p.m.)
