to join scientists, informal and formal educators, students, and
others in *Portland,
Maine, on November 3 and 4, 2016,* to discuss and learn more on the latest
research and education activities surrounding *Ocean Literacy (OL)
principle #3: “The ocean is a major influence on weather in climate.” *
In addition to dynamic presentations from experts in climate change
research, ocean science, and education, the 2016 Summit will also feature a
climate change workshop led by the National Network for Ocean and Climate
Change Interpretation (NNOCCI); a panel on effective climate change
messaging, creative tools, tips and marketing; an interactive Science
and Education Fair to highlight hands-on activities and interpretive ideas
on teaching ocean literacy; and numerous networking opportunities.
There are also many *field trip and social opportunities available for
Summit participants*! On the afternoon of *Thursday, November 3*, Summit
participants can *experience LabVenture! at the Gulf of Marine Research
Institute (GMRI)*, walk the a vibrant “working waterfront” of Portland,
and/or join the staff of the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve
on a *boat
tour of the Webhannet estuary*. On the *evening of Thursday, November 3*
, a *reception*, co-hosted by the Gulf of Maine Marine Educators
Association (GOMEA), will be held at GMRI. The evening will be full
of camaraderie, laughter, and great food, and feature the outrageously
funny and deeply moving storytelling craft of *Peterson Toscano*. After the
Summit concludes on *Friday, November 4*, participants will have an
opportunity to *tour* the *National Weather Service (NWS) Office in Grey,
Maine*, and *participate in a live weather balloon launch*!
