We believe Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is one of the best places to
see aquatic life because of the reliability of sightings, the relative ease at getting
out on this "ocean safari," the dramatic behaviors of the animals -- particularly
humpback whales, fin whales and northern gannets. The sanctuary also has an interesting
assortment of species: the seasonal diversity of seabirds, a variety of endangered
whales, large pods of dolphins, the unusually shaped ocean sunfish, schools of bluefin
tuna and sand lance, and, of course, appearances by large sharks (most notably of
the basking variety).
Of course, experienced divers can also expect to see an interesting assortment of
species, ranging from delicate frilled anemones and colorful northern red anemones,
interesting sea stars, tall sponges, and an ever-changing mix of fishes, including
the iconic cod, haddock, flounders and some very nasty-looking species (goosefish,
wolfish, sea raven, to name a few). You might even catch a glimpse of a lobster
in its natural setting - not in the confines of a supermarket case.
If you would like to get a daily voting reminder, send an email to stellwagen at noaa.gov
[mailto:stellwagen at noaa.gov] (write "add to voting list" in the subject line) and
we will send you a quick note with the voting link each day. If you have additional
email addresses for the list, please include them in the copy block.
We appreciate your help in raising the visibility of New England's only national
marine sanctuary and a very special place for marine life.

The sanctuary's marine ecologist, Dr. Leila Hatch, will be the moderator of a panel
of scientists and conservationists who will discuss sound in the ocean after the
Boston premiere of the film Sonic Sea. The screening will be held at the New England
Aquarium's IMAX Theater on Tuesday, April 12 at 7:00pm. Tickets for the hour-long

Happy Pi Day -- March 14!
March 14, also written 3/14, has been named Pi Day -- a day to celebrate the wonderful
number Pi, which starts off 3.14 but continues on endllessly. The number is an important
tool in calculating the diameter and area of a circle, calculations often used in
the marine environment. In 2009, a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives
was passed designating the day. Pi is defined as an irrational number (its decimal
representation never ends and it never repeats).
