SANDWICH GARDEN TOUR TO BENEFIT THORNTON W. BURGESS SOCIETY
The annual Sandwich Garden Tour to benefit the Thornton W.
Burgess Society and its Green Briar Nature Center, which offers
environmental education programs for children, families and area schools,
takes place on Wednesday, July 13. Enjoy a summer's day visiting seven
beautiful gardens at your leisure anytime between 10am and 4pm. A ticket
covering all seven gardens may be purchased for $30 or individual gardens
may be visited for a fee of $5 each (exact cash to be paid at each garden).
Tickets and a map to each garden are available at the Green Briar Nature
Center, 6 Discovery Hill Road, East Sandwich. This year's tour is tied in
with the Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival sponsored by the Cape Cod Chamber of
Commerce. Call 508-888-6870 for further information.
The following gardens are included on the Burgess Society's
Sandwich Garden Tour and may be visited in any order:
#1 Award Winning Shirley G. Cross Wildflower Garden at the Green Briar
Nature Center in East Sandwich is a true Cape Cod historic site. Observe
three growing areas-bog, shady hillside, open meadow. Additional gardens
surround the building including perennial, annual, succulent, medicinal,
herb, butterfly garden, a holly grove and the "Smiling Pool" pond.
#2 Challenges of Sand on Norse Pines Drive in East Sandwich displays a
whimsical mix of raised beds, container vegetable gardens, wild cottage
plots and formal plantings created six years ago with an almost empty pallet
of Cape Cod sand. This garden also features five different varieties of
hydrangea.
#3 Bubbling Brook Perennial Acre on Village Drive in East Sandwich features
large perennial gardens with flowering trees and a magnificent variety of
rhododendrons, all to be enjoyed by the sound of a flowing brook.
#4 Waterfall Works on a Sunny Hillside Garden on Notre Dame Lane, Mashpee
includes front, side and backyard gardens. The garden begins with a
perennial border in the front and a variety of shrubs planted on each side
of the home. A steep hillside with waterfall running down its center is the
foundation of the backyard's garden
#5 Secret Garden on Summer Street in Sandwich Village gets the most out of
old New England residential village space. This exceptional garden of
perennials and annuals is a beautiful oasis hidden from the street by tall
trees and bushes.
#6 Whimsical Cape Cod Seaside Cottage Garden on Knott Avenue in Sandwich is
a harbor to well-cared for flowers exposed to all the elements of Cape Cod.
Walk the pebble paths by bordered beach stones perennial garden beds and
breathe in the salty air.
#7 Sunshiny & Shady Circular Perennial Garden on Moody Drive in Sandwich
blooms from May through October with many varieties of Day Lilies and
Daisies. The rock walks have an assortment of annuals, both shade and sun
loving. Blue hydrangeas and other shrubs surround the house. Large
Tupelos, Maples and Rhododendrons form a ring around the property.
