Digging into the Past
Changes in the Social, Symbolic and Economic Uses 
of Wampum in Southern New England
with
Anthropologist and Historic Archaeologist
Emily Rux



BREWSTER, MA ­The Cape Cod Museum of Natural 
History in Brewster continues its popular 
archaeology/history series, Digging into the 
Past, with anthropologist and historic 
archaeologist, Emily Rux, Monday, July 18, 2016 at 1pm.

Emily will be speaking about how the use and 
meaning of wampum changed following the period of 
contact between Europeans and Native Americans of 
southern New England. She will discuss the 
transformation of wampum from a social and 
ceremonial symbol to a form of currency during 
the fur trade and the effect that had on daily life.

Emily is a graduate from Bridgewater State 
University with a Bachelor of Science in 
Anthropology with a concentration in Archaeology. 
She was raised in New York and has lived all over 
the United States and currently calls Maine home. 
Emily has always had a passion for studying the 
Contact and early Colonial periods in US history 
and intends to continue her studies in the field of Historic Archaeology.
