Curtis On Tour Performs New Work Celebrating the Cape Cod National Seashore at MBL Summer Concert, July 24

MBL, WOODS HOLE—Tickets are now on sale for the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) Summer Concert . The MBL is pleased to welcome back Curtis On Tour , the Nina von Maltzahn Global Touring Initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music , for its third performance in Woods Hole. The concert will be held on Sunday, July 24 at 7:00 PM in the Lillie Auditorium 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole.

This summer’s program includes a new work, "Forged Sanctuaries: String Quartet No. 2," composed by Curtis alumnus Jonathan Bailey Holland, written in inspiration of the Cape Cod National Seashore and in celebration of the National Park Service Centennial. The commissioning and touring of this work is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The performance will feature musicians Kevin Lin and Laura Park, violin, Yoshihiko Nakano, viola, Youna Choi, cello and Meng-Cheih Liu, piano. They will be performing SHUBERT trio in B-flat major, D.581; ELGAR quintet in A minor along with the newly commissioned work.

Drawing upon 90 years of artistry, the Curtis Institute of Music pairs tradition and innovation, educating exceptionally gifted young musicians as artist-citizens who engage a local and global community through music-making of the highest caliber. Each year 175 students come to Curtis, drawn by a tuition-free, performance-inspired learning culture. In this intimate environment, they are nurtured by a celebrated faculty and inspired by the school’s distinctive “learn by doing” approach, offering more than 200 concerts each year in Philadelphia, as well as performances around the world through Curtis on Tour.

Curtis on Tour is the Nina von Maltzahn global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music. An embodiment of the school’s “learn by doing” philosophy, it offers students real-world, professional touring experience alongside celebrated alumni and faculty. Since the program was established in 2008, students, faculty, and alumni have performed more than 200 concerts in Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

New this year, the MBL is offering a “Pre-Concert Conversation” at 4:00 PM with composer Jonathan Bailey Holland, exclusively for Preferred Seating ticket holders. Join the composer for wine, cheese and an informal discussion of the creative process used to create his new work “Forged Sanctuaries.” This talk will be held in the Meigs Room on the MBL’s Swope Center.

The concert will be followed by a champagne and dessert reception. Tickets for the concert and reception are sold separately. Concert tickets range from $20 to $250 and are available in advance at mbl.edu/concert or by calling 508.289.7423. Tickets will also be available at the door. Dessert reception tickets are $100 each and will be available until 5:00 PM on July 20. Proceeds support the MBL’s renowned research and educational programs.
