All Climate is Local: Lessons in Communicating Science to the Public
At its core, science is a deeply human endeavor to understand and interpret our world. The passion, curiosity, and excitement that drives scientists; the painstaking pace of research; the accidents and mistakes that sometimes lead to important revelations, all are key elements of science that are often lost in the rush to convey scientific facts and figures to the general public. But, without understanding how science - and scientists - work, non-scientists stand little chance of understanding the results they produce.
Heather Goldstone<http://capeandislands.org/people/heather-goldstone> is science editor at WCAI and host of Living Lab on The Point, a weekly show exploring how science gets done and makes its way into our daily lives. Dr. Goldstone holds a Ph.D. in ocean science from M.I.T. and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and spent a decade as a researcher before leaving the lab to pursue journalism. She has reported extensively on Woods Hole's unique scientific community and key environmental issues on Cape Cod. Her stories have appeared in outlets ranging from Cape Cod Times and Commercial Fishery News, to NPR and PBS News Hour. Most recently, Dr. Goldstone hosted Climatide.org<http://www.wgbh.org/byers/Climatide/index.html>, an NPR-sponsored blog exploring present-day impacts of climate change on coastal life.
* Plenary Session where all the participants discuss a current topic in science education.
* Hands-on Workshop Sessions that provide teachers with sample projects, activities and lessons that can be included in their classrooms.
