FEBRUARY E-NEWS Learn more about fun upcoming programs, and hear what Wildlands Trust has been up to this winter! UPCOMING PROGRAMS Winter Trees & Wildlife Tracks Monday, February 15th | 12:30-3:00pm Join Wildlands Trust and Manomet this President's Day as we help your family kick off the start of February Vacation week with an informative nature walk out on the trails at O'Neil Farm. On our walk, we'll learn how to identify local tree species by their bark and buds and look for tracks and other signs of local animals along the trails. This program is suitable for adults and children ages 5 and up. Dress warmly! Register Here - space is limited! Hike with Malcolm Sunday, February 21st | 12:30-3:00pm Join Malcolm MacGregor for another winter walk! This time, we'll be meeting here at Wildlands Trust headquarters and our hike location will depend on local snow & parking conditions -- if there's enough snow, snowshoes welcome! Register now and we'll share details closer to the date. Register Here - space is limited! Family Astronomy Night Saturday, February 27th | 7:00-9:00pm Are you drawn to starry nights? Want to learn more about the constellations that light up the night sky? Join the Sturgis Public Charter School's Astronomy Club here at Wildlands Trust for a Star Gazing Party. Make sure to bundle up in warm clothes! Bring your own chairs and blankets -- telescopes too, if you want to bring them! We'll have plenty to share. Register Here - space is limited! Moonlight Walk for Woodcock Saturday, March 19th | 6:30-8:00pm Join Wildlands Trust and Manomet staff in enjoying one of the first signs of spring: the epic display of the American Woodcock! After a harsh winter, it is often hard to believe that spring will ever come again. Fortunately, in the northeast, our friend the American Woodcock acts as one of the first signs of warmer weather to come. Although they are actually shorebirds, the Woodcock displays in damp fields in the spring before nesting in the woods. This display has earned the Woodcock such colorful nicknames as "Labrador twister" and "timberdoodle." What is this display like? You’ll just have to come on our walk to find out! This program is suitable for adults and children ages 7 and up. Dress warmly and bring your flashlight! Register Here - space is limited! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Trailblazers Work Days Drop-ins welcome, RSVPs appreciated. Please RSVP by e-mailing Emilie. Despite some cold weather both mornings, we had a great turn out of dedicated volunteers. Thank you! WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON: Kiosk Updates Here at Wildlands, we take pride in our public trails and want hikers and trail users to know all about what a preserve has to offer. As such, we have updated several of our kiosks with new maps and interpretive materials, making it easier to find which trails to take and to know what wildlife to watch out for. Be sure to check them out! PAST PROGRAMS: Hike with Malcolm We had yet another fun group hike with Malcolm on January 10th. This time we hiked all the way from the Town of Plymouth's Eel River Preserve to Wildlands Trust's South Triangle Pond Preserve, just shy of 5 miles. So glad to get the chance to show so many of you the great trails of Plymouth!
