How Art and Stories Can Protect Our Oceans

"Plastic pieces in the ocean outnumber plankton 36 to 1!" "We dump 2.4 million pounds of plastic into the ocean every hour!" "More than a million sea birds die each year from eating or getting tangled in plastic!"  So often, just spewing statistics is not enough to inspire people to protect the environment. So, what other strategies do we have?  We have stories, and we have the art which helps us tell them.  In this workshop, we'll look at how storytelling gets at people's emotions and how combining art, science, and stories can be a powerful tool to change our world for the better.  This workshop for middle school students will go over how to tell a good story, and we'll practice by using art - pen, pencil, and watercolor - to help us tell and understand our own story about why we need to protect our oceans.
