The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents
An Evening with American Author and Historian
Nathaniel Philbrick
BREWSTER, MA The Cape Cod Museum of Natural
History in Brewster, MA is very proud to announce
a Cape Cod exclusive speaking engagement and book
signing with award-winning author, historian and
Nantucketer, Nathaniel Philbrick on Wednesday
evening December 2, 2015 at 7pm. Wine, hors doeuvres and Museum exhibits 6pm.
Mr. Philbrick will be speaking about the upcoming
major motion picture based on his New York Times
bestselling novel and recipient of the American
National Book Award in 2000, In the Heart of the
Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. The film
is directed by Academy Award-Winner Ron Howard
and distributed by Warner Bros. and Columbia
Pictures. The scheduled release date is December
11, 2015 just 9 days after Mr. Philbricks appearance at CCMNH.
In his acclaimed novel, Philbrick takes the
reader inside the true, eerie tale of the
ill-fated whaleship Essex an event as mythic in
the nineteenth century as the sinking of the
Titanic was in the twentieth. In 1819, the Essex
left Nantucket for the South Pacific with twenty
crew members aboard. In the middle of the South
Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry
sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than
ninety days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing
to weather, hunger, disease, and ultimately
turning to drastic measures in the fight for
survival. This journey was the inspiration for
Herman Melvilles classic novel Moby Dick, now
considered Americas greatest literary achievement.
In the Heart of the Sea is a monumental work
of history steeped in the lore of the whaling
tradition and the life of the Nantucket community
forever placing the Essex tragedy in the American
historical canon. It will soon make cinematic
history as an exciting, compelling and
suspenseful story of survival on the high seas.
Nathaniel Philbricks other literary works
include Mayflower, Away Off Shore, Sea of Glory,
The Last Stand, Why Read Moby Dick, Bunker Hill,
and his latest novel, the 2nd in the American
Revolution trilogy, Valiant Ambition due to be released in May of 2016.
The presentation will be $50 per person and
includes wine, hors doeuvres and Museum exhibits
at 6pm, Nathaniel Philbrick at 7pm followed by Q&A and book signing.
