Mr. Philbrick will be speaking about the upcoming major motion
picture based on his New York Times bestselling novel and recipient of
the American National Book Award in 2000, In the Heart of the Sea: The
Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. The film is directed by Academy
Award-Winner Ron Howard and distributed by Warner Bros. and Columbia
Pictures. The scheduled release date is December 11, 2015 just 9 days
after Mr. Philbrick’s appearance at CCMNH.

In his acclaimed novel, Philbrick takes the reader inside the true, eerie
tale of the ill-fated whaleship Essex an “event as mythic in the
nineteenth century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the twentieth.”
In 1819, the Essex left Nantucket for the South Pacific with
twenty crew members aboard. In the middle of the South Pacific the ship
was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more
than ninety days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger,
disease, and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for
survival. This journey was the inspiration for Herman Melville’s classic
novel Moby Dick, now considered America’s greatest literary
achievement.

“In the Heart of the Sea is a monumental work of history
steeped in the lore of the whaling tradition and the life of the
Nantucket community forever placing the Essex tragedy in the
American historical canon”. It will soon make cinematic history as an
exciting, compelling and suspenseful story of survival on the high seas.

Nathaniel Philbrick’s other literary works include Mayflower, Away Off
Shore, Sea of Glory, The Last Stand, Why Read Moby Dick, Bunker Hill,
