Fall Lectures at SEA: "What's the Story with Sargassum?"
[Blue shrimp and Sargassum]
Dear Local Friends of SEA,
You're invited to join us on the Sea Education Association campus for our next faculty lecture!
WHEN: Sunday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.
WHERE: Sea Education Association
James L. Madden Center Lecture Hall
171 Woods Hole Road, Falmouth, MA
Free and Open to the Public
About the Lecture
If you've vacationed in the Caribbean recently, you may have encountered a flood of golden brown Sargassum. The abundant seaweed's economic impacts on tourism and fishing even prompted Trinidad to deem the situation a natural disaster.
But there's far more to Sargassum than its tendency to pile up on beaches and tangle with boat propellers. In this illustrated lecture, three SEA Semester scientists will share surprising discoveries from sea about this biologically important ocean flora, including the diverse creatures that interact with it, from familiar sea turtles and flying fish to lesser-known camouflaged crabs.
Join us for a virtual research expedition to the Caribbean Sea<https://t.e2ma.net/click/7zpyk/3oi2km/vedlhd> and the North Atlantic Ocean<https://t.e2ma.net/click/7zpyk/3oi2km/b7dlhd>, where SEA Semester students and scientists on recent high seas sailing voyages have been using old-school techniques and cutting-edge technology to better understand where all this Sargassum is coming from-and its implications for marine environments.
