Cape Cod, MA - The 6th International Oyster Symposium [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001hQs_Xxot4Udtxk_3CW4aImB62KJ9AvMvX5yybRjsL2OcT_zihdFADG_SNL7EgQdbdtJ9hUdkowKPpo_Ayfm5L6KDHAhRee147Gi-cJUu1RBXdS0KlHaaWfng2CixQAO7h3H9FM5pvoOxF_mJhY-3UUpqoW_rByfmYNCOWp1auHqfTqiqlmlN3A==&c=rl3gnQ0T3fRtqi_vUa6JN8AFy5wVp6uuLA8cejaCGtziU3PghytRJg==&ch=c4LdhiF-5m4xTuwSXjnpVuif3Jz1EufJPwLW14HYp1a7ecnMegYUeQ==]
(IOS6), the world's singular conference devoted to oyster science, industry, and
culture, will occur on Cape Cod Massachusetts, USA this fall. Past conferences
have been held in Japan, Taiwan, China, Tasmania, and Vietnam. This will be its
premier in North America.
Why the spotlight on Oysters? Like the keystone to the arch, so is the oyster to
the health of our one ocean; where reefs exist, fish flourish. However, now when
their eco-engineering benefits are needed most, 85% of oyster reef systems are
gone, making them the most endangered habitat worldwide. IOS6 will serve as an inter-disciplinary
exchange by oyster experts in science, industry and culture to champion the oysters'
key role in preserving our one ocean, its coastlines, and fisheries.
A planning team from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Marine Biological
Laboratory, NOAA, Green Harbors Project at University of Massachusetts, Ocean Equities,
LLC, East Coast Shellfish Growers Association, oyster farmers, and a growing list
of local, national, and international enterprises. The team will fashion a dynamic,
dialogic, forward-looking three-day exchange where global representatives from academia,
conservation, government, business and culture communities will convene for presentations
and discussions on applied practices, projects and research relative to the oyster
and its place in ocean preservation.
Public and visitors will also have the opportunity to attend the opening forum,
a Concert and Multi-media Show opening night, an Oyster Grand Tasting dinner, Trade
show/expo, and learn from the incomparable natural beauty of Cape Cod and its oysters.
U.S Congressman William Keating will speak at the symposium. Massachusetts State
Senator Dan Wolf comments, "IOS6 provides an important opportunity for our local
industry to make strong connections to the world market, and exchange cutting edge
research and best practices to benefit the global industry and our environment."
Barton Seaver, Harvard University Sustainable Food program director, National
Geographic Fellow and Executive Chef and author will be one of three keynote speakers.
The World Oyster Society has approximately 600 members from 34 countries and is
growing due to its commitment to advancing oyster literacy and fueling the oyster
'renaissance' within science, industry and culture. Dr. Katusyoshi Mori, President
of the World Oyster Society and Japan's Oyster Research Institute, and Professor
Emeritus of Tohoku University states, "This will be an important moment, bringing
together all who have linkage to oyster science and industry who are looking for
a more holistic view of oysters within the planet's ecosystem. We are very happy
to broaden the reach of the WOS to North America and especially to Cape Cod. "Let
the sea live, and let us live with the sea" a message Dr. Mori promotes for the
benefit of humankind through his oyster research.
