Wilson's Storm Petrels: Do Birds of a Feather Molt Together?
Presented by Susan Finnegan and Peter Trull
Wednesday, March 25 at 7 pm at Napi's Restaurant, Freeman Street, Provincetown.

Sue Finnegan examines the wing feathers of a Wilson's Storm Petrel
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wilson's Storm Petrels breed in the winter in the southern hemisphere. Their chicks
fledge in March, and shortly thereafter embark on their first migration across the
equator to their summer feeding grounds in the western North Atlantic.
But when and where do these young birds shed their feathers (molt) for the first
 time? Is it here, in the north, when the mature adults molt, or later, when they
return en masse to their southern breeding grounds?
To find the answer to this conundrum, Susan Finnegan and Peter Trull took to the
 seas off New England to examine the Petrels one at a time. Sue and Peter's illustrated
overview of their research will inspire a new appreciation for these wide-roaming
sea birds!
