Why Send a Tick to College?
Thursday, June 11 at 7:00PM
Waquoit Bay Reserve Visitor Center
131 Waquoit Highway ( Rt. 28), Waquoit

Waquoit Bay Reserve and Friends of Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge invite you to a talk by Dr. Stephen Rich, Professor of Microbiology and Director of the Laboratory of Medical Zoology at
U. Mass Amherst. Dr. Rich will describe his work on tick-borne disease surveillance and prevention. He will explain the biology of ticks and the risks of exposure, emphasizing the importance of knowing that it is not just the Lyme bacteria that we have to fear these days.

Dr. Rich reveals a local "hot spot" for Lone Star ticks, a newer species on Cape Cod that harbors other diseases and behaves differently than the dog or deer ticks you may be familiar with. He will discuss his lab's work and the results from a Barnstable County program that enables people to send ticks to his U. Mass lab for testing. The tests can determine if that tick you just removed was carrying one or more of the various diseases that can be transmitted by these parasites. Bring your questions and learn the best ways to protect yourself while enjoying the Cape's natural areas this summer.

Reasonable accommodations upon request.
Registration not required.
$5.00 suggested donation to the Friends of MNWR
