The Annual Butterfly Count established for Cape Cod Museum of Natural
History will start at 9:00 am on Saturday, July 25. We meet and
organize our count and the sites we will go to. Joe Dwelly will be
the leader this year and will be meeting the participants in the
parking area. joedwelly at yahoo.com
There are four butterfly counts (much like bird counts) on the Cape
in July. We ask for many volunteers whether able to identify
butterflies or just to spot them for the more experienced. It is a
great learning experience and in succeeding years each participant
becomes more useful! (and we hope more addicted to this new outdoor
sport or passion). We meet at 9 am,, set off in teams to several
sites, visit the most popular habitats, enjoy a full day outdoors,
and regroup at 1 or 2 pm to report. We carpool to several sites;
there is not a huge amount of walking.
Participants should bring water, sunhat, sandwich, and binoculars.
We do not catch the butterflies but look at them with binoculars to
identify the species.
The 4th of July Butterfly Counts take place annually on the same date
and at the same sites. The more people on each team, the more sites
can be covered. The data is entered into a database which is
published by NABA (North American Butterfly Association, see
www.NABA .org). Also see MassButterflyClub on that site.
