Announcement of our Ocean Science and Technology Class Field Trip Opportunity in Woods Hole
We are pleased to announce that once again we will host class field trips in Woods Hole during which students go out on a hands-on scientific cruise on Vineyard Sound and tour some of the laboratory facilities in Woods Hole. Since 2010 over 7000 middle, high school and college students have participated in this program. We particularly emphasize engineering technology used in oceanographic research, career paths, and some of the research projects currently underway here. See our website www.zephyrmarine.org
New this year:
Optional Ocean Scientist Program:
We're pleased to announce the launch of our new, comprehensive field-to-classroom Ocean Scientist Program. The OS Program integrates the invaluable hands-on learning environment of the oceanographic cruise and lab session with follow-up web-based classroom activities for your school. It is designed with a clear set of NGSS-aligned tasks for students to bring what they’ve learned in the field, back into the classroom.
Students collect data themselves using their own smart-phone or iPads equipped with our downloaded app (a limited number of devices are available from Zephyr upon request.) Students make water quality measurements and then venture into WHOI’s working seawater lab where they record observations of marine animals.
Following the field trip, teachers and students will have access to continued learning with students' own data (and thse collected by other classes) using the Discovery Hub and a standards-aligned curriculum. The curriculum is designed to integrate the hands-on work that students perform in the field to answer scientific questions raised during their trip.
Our Augmented Reality Sandbox:
Go to our website to see this fantastic hands-on topographic mapping educational sandbox that students can use collaboratively during their time in Woods Hole.
Here is a clip of the first class to use it: https://vimeo.com/116344834
Major Field Trip Components:
Hands-on Scientific Cruise on Vineyard Sound
Session in one of the laboratories' live specimen labs
Session with the AR Sandbox
Optional Ocean Scientist Program
Optional Salt Marsh walk
Opportunity to visit other facilities in Woods Hole
Attached is a more detailed trip description and written comments from teachers and students.
