Position Announcement: Research Director
Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, Wells, Maine

The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve seeks a dynamic and creative Research Director to lead our research and environmental monitoring programs.

The Research Director oversees research and monitoring activities of the Wells Reserve. This includes oversight of long-term weather, water quality, and biological monitoring initiatives, on-going river and salt marsh restoration efforts, as well as initiation of new research that is responsive to stakeholder needs in Southern Maine, New England, and the NERR System. The person in this position administers, manages, and develops all facets of the Research Program; conducts individual and team research; supervises staff, interns, and graduate students; interfaces with the public; writes external grants and manages a program budget. The Research Director reports to the Reserve Director.

Qualifications: A PhD at the time of appointment in ecology, biology, environmental science, or related field; demonstrated scientific research in estuarine / coastal ecology; grant-writing experience; supervisory experience; and effective communication and partnership-building skills. Post-doctoral and/or other relevant professional experience preferred.

The Wells Reserve is a 2,250-acre protected area located on the south coast of Maine that seeks to expand knowledge and advance the stewardship of coasts and estuaries through science, education, and conservation. The Wells Reserve is part of a system of 28 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-designated Estuarine Research Reserves around the country.
