About BLACK SAILS

Long before "Moby Dick" was written, American whalers crossed the Pacific Ocean
and encountered a wild island peopled by a race of Maori hunters eager to join them.

For over 50 years, hundreds of American ships made New Zealand their base. Their
encounters with Maori were sometimes bloody, but more often entrepreneurial in
spirit. And with the call of adventure upon them, thousands of young Maori men joined
the crews of these ships, going into battle with enormous whales and stoking the
blubber fires that turned the sails black with smoke.

>From the gory massacre of the crew of the "Boyd" in Whangaroa Harbour, to the roaring
trade that filled the docks of Kororareka, "BLACK SAILS" depicts a nation undergoing
a radical transformation in a lawless era. Ultimately, the joining of these two
cultures led to the establishment of European society in New Zealand.

Today, the stories of Maori and American New Englanders are inextricably joined.
This shared history has been largely forgotten, acknowledged only by scattered
relics in a handful of museums along the New England coast and in New Zealand, most
notably at the Butler Point Whaling Museum at Mangonui in Doubtless Bay, the location
of the beginning and end of American whaling in New Zealand. BLACK SAILS will finally
bring this incredible story to light.
