Reminder:
Thursday,
July 17, 2014 Members Meeting
On May 29th, 2014 OCT hosted a Special Meeting of the Members, at which time Members
had the opportunity to provide feedback relating to updating the language in the
 Declaration
of Trust.
At the Special Meeting, it was agreed that more dialogue between the Board and OCT
Members would be useful to help ensure that all opinions were received and considered.
To this end, the Board has scheduled two additional meetings on the following dates:
Thursday, July 17th
and Tuesday, August 5th. Both meetings will start at 5:00pm at the Orleans Council
on Aging,

Namequoit Bog Educational Walk

Property Details: The 22.5 acre Namequoit Bog property was owned by the Heyelman
 family for several decades until it was sold as a bargain sale acquisition to the
Orleans Conservation Trust in 1998 for $185,000.  Approximately 17 acres of the 
parcel had been actively farmed as a cranberry bog with associated drainage ditches
and a sluiceway to regulate the water flow between the bog and the adjacent Paw 
Wah Pond. Farming ceased around 1950 and the bog was allowed to slowly grow in with
a thick layer of briar species. From 2000-2010 the Trust conducted a number of land
management activities within the bog, but it wasn't until the winter of 2013/2014
that a formal management plan was designed, and is now being implemented. During
 the walk hikers will hear about the historical use of the bog, why it was so important
to preserve, and what management tactics are being implemented today to encourage
the bog to transition to a wet meadow vegetative community
Directions: From the intersection of Rt. 28 and Main Street Orleans head south on
Rt. 28 towards Chatham (1.7 miles). Take a left onto Namequoit Road and follow for
1 mile to trail head parking on right.
