Shellfish and Aquaculture Specialist
Job Description
Title: Shellfish and Aquaculture Specialist
Reports to: Shellfish Promotion and Tasting, Inc. (SPAT)/Wellfleet Shellfish Research Committee (WSRC)
Based at: Wellfleet, MA
Description: To better understand how vibrio interacts with its environment and its hosts, Shellfish Promotion and Tasting, Inc. (SPAT) and the Wellfleet Shellfish Advisory Board (SAB) seek to hire a Shellfish and Aquaculture Specialist to monitor and assess local waters especially during summer months, develop and implement a plan for vibrio control, educate shell fishermen and the public about this issue and evaluate this process as a model for Wellfleet and other communities.
This is a new position which will evolve as needs dictate. It is a full-time seasonal position in which the candidate can expect to work more hours in the summer season (March – October) and less in the winter. A Bachelor's Degree in Marine Biology is strongly desired and compensation is commensurate with experience.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities:
• Develop working relationship with growers to learn their unique
accomplishments and challenges
· Demonstrate knowledge of the shellfish regulations and regulatory process
· Educate and disseminate standards and practices for harvest and post- harvest handling of shellfish to the shellfishermen (beyond what is required by the DMF to ensure safe harvesting especially during summer months)
• Educate public and non-commercial shellfish permit holders about safe handling and consumption of shellfish
· Educate public and promote Wellfleet’s pro-active approach toward vibrio
· Report and document violations to appropriate agencies
· Survey shellfishermen periodically on compliance with regulation, need for education and marketing efforts
Deliverables:
• Communicate with appropriate state and local agencies (Department of Public Health, Division of Marine Fisheries, SPAT, SAB and the Town of Wellfleet Shellfish Department) on a weekly basis, to stay informed of regulatory changes and to inform them of Wellfleet’s proactive approach
· Implement training protocol for commercial harvesters, growers, dealers, retailers and servers by June 2014
· Develop a Harvester Certification Program in collaboration with the Barnstable County Extension and implement this program with the support of the Shellfish Advisory Board
· Coordinate methods with the Wellfleet Shellfishing Department to trace oysters to harvest or storage area with the possibility of a system for specific bed, grant or area closures
· Research vibrio management plans in other communities and recommend a real-time monitoring system that would predict risk of vibrio in Wellfleet
· Create and implement a plan for vibrio monitoring and control
